After you have purchased your cheap mascot costume, depending on your intended purpose for your costume, there are still some potential rules to follow when conducting yourself in public. These rules are based on our own empirical experience with mascot costumes over a long period of time.

  • It's always useful to have an aide with you when wearing the costume.

?If you are planning on using the costume in public as a corporate mascot or at a public event, then your mascot wearer should have a designated buddy. This person should either be an alternate wearer (someone to take over from you) or be someone who will attend to your logistical needs.

  • You should work out a non-verbal way of communicating with your aide.

Maybe hand signals or something similar to indicate several different scenarios you will potentially face, such as needing the bathroom, needing a drink, getting hot etc.

  • Make your movements exaggerated and slow

You are essentially acting a "larger than life" character role in your cheap mascot costume. Members of the public expect this character to act in such a way, and making exaggerated, slow movements is one way of expressing these character traits.

  • Do not make sudden, fast movements around small children

Small children can be easily spooked and frightened if you make fast and unexpected movements. Scaring children is a surefire way of making a bad impression with members of the adult community.

  • Take giant steps when walking, don't drag your feet

?Again, part of acting in character. By taking large, comical steps you acting in a "larger than life manner" associated with cartoon characters. By dragging your feet you may be giving off the impression that your character may be slightly sad or sulky. Remember, you are communicating universally with body language.

  • Smile underneath your mascot costume

?This is really an old technique taken from telemarketing. They ask their telemarketers to smile when talking on the phone to customers, and the fact they are smiling often generally changes their overall demeanour when dealing with people. The same holds true when wearing a mascot costume.

  • Don't take off any part of your costume or disclose who is wearing it.

?As I have previously mentioned, you are essentially trying act "in character" based on the costume you are wearing. There's no surer way of shattering this illusion than taking any part of the animal costume off and revealing who is wearing it.

  • Take a break every half hour or so

Take it from us, no matter how well made or how high quality the cheap mascot costume is, they are not breathable!! Especially on a warm day, every half hour (or less) sneak to a secluded place and grab a glass of water. Just be mindful of rule 7!!
